Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these treatments need to be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
