Since the launch of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a colorful mix of personalities, and a thrilling plot featuring angels, demons, and dark forces increasing in power within the urban setting.
Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of the new season follow below.
The Soldiers Table Unveiled
Episode 3 ended with a dramatic pause and introduced the first table of adventurers who will branch out from the main group to begin their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.
The Soldiers table features the determined fighter (brought to life by the voice actor), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).
Why Split the Party?
With a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that having everyone at the same party would be impossible.
That’s why, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Prelude, connecting the personal journeys before dividing into three separate parties: Warriors, Planners, and Explorers.
What Defines the Combat Party
As described by the DM, the warrior group is for participants who enjoy a classically intense combat and conflict-driven story mode where non-violent answers are rare.
At first glance, characters like the squeamish cleric the cleric might appear out of place, but the events of the third episode demonstrate why these particular heroes are best suited for the combat party.
Reasons to Leave
For one thing, the team understands precisely where to head next after a violent first encounter with The Crow Keepers.
A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing kicked off the narrative’s action—exploited the foes for his selfish purposes, breaking into the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and taking all the enchanted items to sell off.
The antagonist then cleared his debts and ran away to a secure base in the remote area, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.
Personal Motivations
Secondly, each character has a individual motive to leave the city the urban setting:
- Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, wants retribution.
- Kattigan knows the region and warns that it is a hostile location.
- Tyranny and Wicander, having resisted his family’s wishes to execute the fighter and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
- Yet, their reputation as important members in House Halovar could help the team reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Moreover, The grateful character pledged a eternal obligation to The cleric for his salvation and will now follow him everywhere.
Fugitives
In addition, all of them are sought by the rulers that control the city for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:
- The rogue and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
- The strong figure and Wicander defied the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
- The fighter is targeted for elimination by the clan.
This means them no alternative but to head to Timmony in search of the traitor.
Future Episodes
Based on the recent installment’s Cooldown, we learn that the combat party won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight cast members to round up the Questers and Schemers groups.
Audiences can expect learning which characters will be in which group in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, released on October 24.
